BIRMINGHAM, AL (CNN/WBRC) -- Police in Birmingham, Alabama are looking for killer. A young mother was shot and killed Monday while she was holding her 10-day old baby.
Police say 24-year-old Sherri Williams was standing in the doorway of her apartment Monday afternoon when things got out of control. Sgt. Johnny Williams says, "There appeared to be an altercation across the street somewhere between her apartment and the store shots were fired and she was struck by one of the rounds."
Police say Williams was going about her business tending to her newborn. Sgt. Williams says, "It's even more sad because she was holding her infant in her arms, when she was shot. Fortunately, the baby was not injured."
This is just the latest incident in the area. Back in March a man was shot in a neighboring apartment complex. While trying to drive off he crashed his car into a utility pole in gate city and later died at the hospital. Williams says, "We've had a couple of challenges in Gate City but nothing real particular about the entire community being out of control. We had that incident and we did have one other homicide earlier in the year but those are two major incidents we've had this year."
But because of this latest incident a son will now grow up without his mother. Williams says, "So we really need to public to step up on this and give us all the information we have, so we can get this person off the street."
