HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (KTHV) - A Hot Springs man was arrested on two felony counts of rape Saturday in connection with the alleged sexual assaults of two underage girls in Glenwood.
William Edward Woodell, 70, who lists an address of 106 Lacrosse St., reportedly turned himself in Friday night and was officially booked in on the charges shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday.
Each count is punishable by up to life in prison, and Woodell remained in custody Tuesday in lieu of $100,000 bond. He is set to appear July 16 in Garland County District Court.
According to Garland County Sheriff's Department reports, the mother, 29, of two girls, ages 7 and 9, all of Glenwood, filed a complaint on Thursday alleging that she and the victims were at the suspect's house that morning between 8 and 9 a.m. and the 7-year-old was with the suspect.
She said she walked outside for a few minutes and when she returned into the room the suspect and victim acted "startled" and the suspect quickly covered himself with a blanket.
She became concerned about his behavior and later talked to the 7-year-old, who stated the suspect had touched her privates and made her touch his privates. In talking with the 9-year-old, she stated the same thing had happened to her with the suspect.
The victims were taken to Mercy Hospital Hot Springs, which referred them to Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock to have a sexual assault kit done.
The Arkansas State Police Crimes Against Children Division and GCSD investigators both assumed the case and were working on getting charges filed when Woodell came into the sheriff's department and gave a statement regarding the allegations and was arrested.
