CONWAY, Ark. (KTHV) - A monkey on the loose caused a bit of a raucous in Conway Tuesday night. The 911 dispatch center fielded a number of calls as a result of Joey the Macaque going for a walk around town.
Most of the 911 calls involved officers who were dispatched to an Animal Clinic on Chestnut Street. One of the conversations included an officer saying it appeared an employee was leaving the clinic, and then quickly realizing it was actually a monkey. The calls also included helpful advice, such as "be careful, they (monkeys) like to throw poop at people," which led to another officer chiming in to ask, "Who's throwing poop at people?"
Officers conversed about how the monkey appeared to be angry, and mentioned how they were keeping a safe distance from him so as not to scare him. There were also requests for animal control to assist in his capture.
The most entertaining call came from a driver in the area who started off by saying, "Please don't think I'm an idiot, but I'm just driving by, and there's a monkey running around out here, I swear to God." She continued to describe the situation, while laughing, and confirmed that it was in fact a monkey running around the building. She took breaks from providing the dispatcher with play-by-play information to "bless him," as in blessing his heart. (To listen to the driver's full 911 call, play the video above.)
Officers were able to safely get Joey inside the animal clinic, where he was later placed back in his cage. That wasn't before he played with a cat and threw some pencils around, though. With the exception of a bit knuckle, no one was harmed during Joey's adventure.
