VARNER, Ark. (KTHV/AP) - State prison officials have announced that an inmate has died after a failed escape attempt at the Varner Unit at Grady.
Department of Correction spokeswoman Shea Wilson said 29-year-old Vann Tucker climbed over one security fence Saturday and tried to go over an electrified fence when he was shocked and fell. He died at 8:57 p.m. Tuesday at UAMS after suffering head trauma.
Wilson said the fence delivered a shock of 5,200 volts.
The department's website shows that Tucker was convicted of second-degree murder in Pope County in 2001 and was later sentenced to life in prison as a habitual offender.
