OREGON (CBS) -- Irina, princess of Romania, and her husband were arrested in Oregon under accusations of being part of a suspected cockfighting ring.
John Wesley Walker, 67 years old, and Irina Walker, aged 60, the third daughter of Romania's King Michael I, are accused of having staged at least ten cockfights at their ranch in the past year. The accused cockfight hosts, with a supporting cast of 16 other suspects in Oregon and at least 10 in Washington, were charged in a conspiracy to violate the federal Animal Welfare Act.
The indictment alleges that the derbies featured dozens of cockfights in a ring. The roosters were fighting to their death, with knives, gaffs or other cutting instruments attached to their legs, in a blood sport now outlawed in all 50 states.
The Royal family issued a statement saying : "His Majesty King Michael I has found out with great sadness about the events connected to his daughter, princess Irina. His Majesty and the entire royal family hope that the American justice system and Oregon state court will resolve this case in the most rightful and swift way possible. His Majesty hopes the presumption of innocence will function as it is legal and moral, from the beginning until the end of this unhappy event."
