CARLISLE, Ark. (KTHV) -- Rice farmers in Carlisle say they squared off with a gigantic cottonmouth snake. Now a picture of the serpent is gaining buzz online.

Lee Schafer pulled up a picture of proof that he stood off with a massive cottonmouth. The day started like any other on the family's rice farm.

"We got a slough that's got a bunch of beaver dams in it. We were tearing it out to keep the water out of the beans, and we saw it on the edge of the field there."

Schafer and his farm hand Arnie Rodriguez stared down the poisonous serpent knowing they had a fight on their hands.

"I guess it was so big, it knew it was, and it started coming toward us," said Schafer.

The farmers said they didn't have time to be afraid as instinct kicked in. Rodriguez actually killed the snake with a farm rake, and Schafer said it's a day he'll never forget.

"It was more fat than anything, its head was about as big as my hand," said Schafer.

The farmers said they left the snake in the area where they found it and assume that other animals have now eaten it.

The average length of the Western Cottonmouth is three feet. Arkansas Game and Fish officials could not confirm the snake was a cottonmouth by looking at the picture. Officials remind the public it is illegal to kill snakes unless they are threatening you.
