HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (KTHV) - Derrick Estell, the inmate who escaped from the Garland County Detention Center in July, has been captured in Florida.

According to the Santa Rosa County (FL) jail website, Estell and his girlfriend Tamara Upshaw were booked Friday morning.

Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Deputy Rich Aloy told THV 11 that Garland County authorities contacted them with information on where the duo may be. Santa Rosa authorities gathered a team of detectives, who worked with the U.S. Marshals, and a regional task force to locate them.

Aloy said the two were arrested at an abandoned house, which they were living in for up to a week. When authorities arrived at the location, they surrounded the house on all sides. Seeing that they were surrounded, Aloy said Estell and Upshaw left the house willingly and were arrested without incident.

Since the suspects were cooperative with Florida authorities, they will not face additional charges from that state.

At a press conference Friday afternoon, Garland County authorities credited helpful people and technology for leading to the arrests of Estell and Upshaw, noting that they had no weapon or mode of transportation with them at the time of the arrests.

Garland Co. Sgt. Joel Ware said, "This should send a message to all fugitives that there is no family larger than law enforcement."

He also said, "We will take steps to make sure this doesn't happen again. We replaced the sliding window Estell escaped from."

Estell and Upshaw had been on the run since Estell escaped from Garland County Detention Center on July 28 by diving out of a window. It is believed that they may have gone on a crime spree in Missouri, where authorities said they occupied an abandoned home, and stole a truck and ammunition.

Authorities have not set an extradition date for the two to return to Arkansas. They are being held in a Florida jail, where there are extra security measures surrounding them, including a personal escort for Estell when leaves the jail cell.
