LAS VEGAS, NV (CBS/KLAS) -- As federal funds dry up, it could be the death of a vulnerable desert animal that's enjoyed special treatment for many years.

The Desert Tortoise Conservation Center near Las Vegas will be closing soon, but before the facility shuts its doors, wildlife officials plan to euthanize hundreds of tortoises that they've sheltered for more than two decades.

Officials expect to put down more than half the 1,400 reptiles at the research center in preparation for closure by the end next year.

Ironically, it's the same facility that has pampered and protected the animals since they were added to the endangered species list in 1990.
