BENTON, Ark. (KTHV) - Saline County Quorum Court members on Monday started discussions over appointing an interim sheriff to replace current Sheriff Bruce Pennington.
"Anything is possible," said Justice of the Peace Josh Mesker.
Mesker said they narrowed the pool 18 applicants down to a final four, after a couple were disqualified.
The four remaining candidates are: Dale Donham, Cleve Barfield, Terrell Burks, and Phillip Newcomb.
"I think it will be a long and productive discussion," said Mesker.
On Monday the quorum court went into an executive session to discuss the applicants.
Five of the original 18 applicants currently work for the Saline County Sheriff's Department.
"The consensus that I am getting is that they (citizens) would like somebody from outside of the department," said Mesker.
"I think this is an opportunity for us to appoint somebody to fill out that term for the next year and a couple months and leave it in a very good place for the next sheriff," he adds.
Pennington retires on October 1; THV will continue following this story and provide updates as they become available.
