HARRISON, Ark. (AP) - Harrison's mayor joined protesters near a billboard that carries a racist message to thank them for attempting to improve the community's image.

A billboard went up Tuesday reading "Anti-Racist is a Code Word for Anti-White," enraging those trying to overcome Harrison's racist past. Mayor Jeff Crockett said Thursday it was important to show the world that the sign doesn't reflect the community's beliefs.

Harrison is overwhelmingly white and Boone County is the home of an arm of the Ku Klux Klan. A city task force has been trying to change Harrison's image as a place tolerant of racism.

Near the billboard Thursday, about 30 people showed up to protest the sign. Two men showed up in support of the billboard, one with a sign reading "White People 4 Free Speech."
