LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Three days remain for parents and students to claim tuition and fees as a deductible on tax returns.
Even though Jan. 31 is the earliest you can file your taxes, Arkansas Select Tax Service said the deadline to pay tuition and fees comes earlier for filing 2013 taxes.
"This year, if they do not pay [the bill for tuition and fees] by the 31st, then those will not be deductible for this coming year, and that can be up to $4,000," said Jim Williams with the tax service.
The delay to file taxes this year stems from the government shutdown a few months ago. Tax officials said nearly 90 percent of the IRS was shutdown, including the department that handles taxes for 2014.
