January 21, 2014 (KFSM) - There was a major disruption for rail and river traffic in northwest Arkansas on Tuesday.
A railroad bridge broke late Monday night, forcing a halt on traffic between Van Buren and Fort Smith.
It's also causing congestion and major delays for barges on the Arkansas River.
Ron Sparks with the A&M railroad said two cables which raise and lower the bridge snapped.
"We do have some suspensions that the high gust of winds could've played a factor in it. We're not sure yet until we get the bridge inspectors to tell us what all is wrong with the bridge, but it did snap two of the cables," said Sparks.
Sparks said the bridge goes through regular maintenance monthly and is inspected annually.
He said the bridge will be shut down for at least a week.
