A Fort Smith police officer was killed while helping a mother retrieve her child from a residence where she previously had a run in with her ex-boyfriend.
Thirty-three-year-old Officer Daniel C. Martinez was shot in the head last night and died later at a hospital. 22-year-old Donna Stevens was shot in the back, shoulder and elbow, and taken to a Little Rock hospital for treatment. She is listed in serious condition.
A police spokesman says 26-year-old Richard Englebright -- the suspect and the brother of Stevens' former boyfriend -- fled from the home in a car and shot himself in the head before Oklahoma Highway Patrol officers found him in his car near Spiro, Oklahoma.
Police say Richard Englebright shot the officer and Stevens when they went to the residence to get Stevens' baby. Stevens' grandmother took the baby into her care.
Earlier that day, Stevens and her boyfriend, 24-year-old Bobby Englebright, got into a dispute at the home, and Bobby Englebright was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, false imprisonment, and battery. He was jailed in the Sebastian County Jail.
Officer Martinez had served for several years with the Poteau and Panama police departments in Oklahoma before becoming police chief in Shady Point and taking the same job in Wister, both also in Oklahoma. He joined the Fort Smith Police Department last July Third.
Martinez is survived by his wife, Alice, and five children.
