LONOKE COUNTY, Ark. (KTHV) - Lonoke County deputies are asking the public for help bringing an end to a string of recent metal thefts.
Police said since January, there have been 91 reported copper and scrap metal thefts in the county, farms, construction sites and homes are being heavily targeted causing tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage.
Lt. James Kulesa with the Lonoke County Sheriff's Office said while some citizens legitimately recycle scrap metal, others are stealing it and proving which is which can be difficult.
"There's a tracking system of scrap metal, you know who's taking scrap metal where and how much but again, with scrap metal it's a theft that's hard to prove because you have to identify where that came from," said Kulesa.
Authorities are asking the public to be on the lookout for trucks hauling large amounts of metal at night. If you can get a license plate number, they ask you call the sheriff's department and report it.
