Grinch steals packages off front porches in Searcy

grinch steals packages

SEARCY, Ark. (KTHV) - It happens every year. Christmas presents are taken straight from front porches. In Searcy, one incident was caught on camera.

Heather Haney’s package was delivered from FedEx around noon Wednesday. Around 3 p.m., someone was caught on camera stealing the package. It was about $250 worth of Polo for her husband’s Christmas gift.

"In the video you can see they hit our next door neighbor and they’ve also been wandering in our neighborhood asking for directions," said Haney.

Searcy Police say this is common for this time of year. They’re working five package thefts that happened within the past two weeks.

“It has happened the past few days and wave had officers out. Some of us will see UPS, FedEx and we'll follow them to see where there dropping off and if anyone else is following them," said Officer Todd Dewitt with Searcy Police.

While there’s not much you can do to keep the grinches away, there are some things you can do to keep your packages safe.

Police suggest having a neighbor watch out for your deliveries or send them to your workplace. UPS also suggests telling the driver where you want your packages left ahead of time. You can also use a UPS or Post office mailbox.

Also, for about two bucks, you can even send your packages to an Anytime Valet located at places like gas stations or apartments in Little Rock, North Little Rock, and Sherwood.

"I hate that we have to witness something like that and our neighbors who have children got toys stolen," said Haney.

Police encourage homeowners to purchase security cameras because it helps them solve these crimes.
