Pine Bluff police warn about 'hospital, bail' phone scams

PINE BLUFF, Ark. (KTHV) – The Pine Bluff Police Department is warning people in the area about several scammers.

The police department said people of different age groups have received phone calls stating someone in their family has been in an accident and was taken to the hospital.

The scammers tell the relatives they need money for the hospital visit. Scammers have also called people saying their relatives are in jail and need money for bail.

The scammers claim to be a representative with the IRS or posing as officers. They are asking for large sums of money and telling victims to purchase Walmart cards and to give them the PIN numbers to the cards.

Walmart has also been made aware of this recent scam. They have told their employees to ask questions when it comes to large amounts of money being wired or purchased for the cards.

The police department has asked the public to report any suspicious activity.

Here are a few friendly reminders:

  1. The IRS will not contact you via telephone.
  2. The IRS will not accept Walmart gift cards as a collection for debt.
  3. Police officers will not contact you to collect any debt.
