Sherwood Elementary Odyssey of the Mind team

SHERWOOD, Ark. (KTHV) -- Sherwood Elementary's Odyssey of the Mind team won their regional competition, and the right to represent Arkansas in the world games in Iowa.

This seven-member team, made up of third, fourth and fifth graders, was given a special challenge, and they had to create something unusual that answered the challenge.

In this case, the team came up with an "O-motional vehicle." It's a specially constructed vehicle that portrays several emotions. It combines physics and emotional intelligence, and it was a big winner at regional. Now, it's on to a possible world championship.

But, here again, the team was a confronted with a problem: how to raise the money for the trip. Once again, the team came up with a solution.

This is where the pig comes in.

Students in Sherwood would collect donations, with the three classes bringing in the highest totals getting to watch their teacher kiss a pig.

Monday, Jamie Schumacker, Andy Johnson, and Carrie Overton, three well respected, successful teachers, had to pucker up and kiss the pig. The school went wild. It was all worth it. Over $1,200 was raised for the idea. Now, thanks to the pig, it's on to Iowa!

By the way, last year's team, also from Sherwood, finished fourth.
