LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Our partners at Arkansas Business report civil rights attorney Christopher Mercer died Tuesday morning at his Little Rock home.
Born in Pine Bluff in 1924, Mercer is one of the six African American students who integrated the University of Arkansas School of Law. He graduated the law school in 1955.
Mercer also played a pivotal role in the integration of Little Rock Central High School.
An advisor to Daisy Bates in 1957, he helped transport the "Little Rock Nine" to and from school their first semester.
Mercer served as a member of the Arkansas Council on Human Relations and as the Arkansas field secretary for the NAACP.
He was 88 years old.
