HOT SPRING COUNTY, Ark. (KTHV) - Emergency officials have confirmed that a juvenile has died and others were critically injured following a train-vehicle collision in Hot Spring County.
LifeNet Spokesperson Jason Gartner told THV11 that a group was involved in a crash regarding a train and an SUV on March 6. Sgt. Perry with the Hot Spring County Sheriff's Office said four of them were related and one was a family friend. According to Jeff DeGraff with Union Pacific, only four individuals were in the SUV, with an adult female driving along with three juvenile passengers.
One of the victims, a juvenile, was pronounced dead at the scene. The others were rushed to a local hospital, including two air transports to Children's.
DeGraff informed THV11 that in the preliminary investigation the train crew stated that they acknowledged the SUV by flashing its lights. The SUV then paused briefly and proceeded to try and beat the train.
The crash occurred on tracks near 100 Old Dixonville Road. Sgt. Perry said there was damage to the passenger side and that it was dragged about 150 yards down the tracks. He added that this is the third fatal accident to happen in six years at this particular crossing.
