WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama's endorsement of gay marriage has done little to shift the nation's views on the subject.

A new Associated Press-GfK poll finds that the public remains evenly split on the issue but that Obama's core supporters are fired up - at least for now. More young people, liberals, Democrats and even moderates now have a strongly favorable view of Obama's handling of same-sex marriage than before he made history as the first sitting president to back such rights.

Obama's May 9 announcement came with the risk of turning off voters. But the public's general mood has not swung wildly nor have voters fled the president.

Some 42 percent of Americans oppose gay marriage, 40 percent support same-sex marriage and 15 percent are neutral.
