LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - When it comes to babies & pregnancies there are hundreds of myths. But how do you know what is true and what is false?
Dr. Kay Chandler from Cornerstone Clinic for Women sat down with THV11’s Laura Monteverdi to give us the scoop.
Here’s what we asked:
Q: Can you figure out what you’re having before you get the test?
A: There’s no way to figure out if you’re having a girl or boy unless you get an ultrasound or amniocentesis. There are a lot of myths about how you carry the baby. If your stomach sticks out front it’s a boy, if it’s spread out it’s a girl. If you have acne, some say girl while others say, boy. There are the ring tests. None of that works according to Dr. Chandler.
Q: Is it true that if you get heartburn a lot, it means your child has more hair?
A: There’s some truth to that when you have heartburn part of the is because the sphincter that leads between the esophagus and the stomach can be relaxed more with hormones. So, if you have higher estrogen levels it might be relaxed a little more and you can get more reflux. And higher estrogen levels can be associated with more hair for the baby.
Q: Can getting more sleep during pregnancy shorten your labor?
A: Absolutely. There’s a study that came out that showed that women in their last trimester who slept less than six hours a night had significantly longer labors and about four times greater chance of having a cesarean section. Why is that? Sleep is restorative. You need to sleep whether you’re pregnant or not. You need eight hours of sleep at least.
Q: Is it unsafe to dye your hair while you’re pregnant?
A: There’s no evidence; animal studies, lots of women dye their hair during pregnancy and nothings been associated with having birth defects. But it is chemicals on our hair and on our scalp. The chemicals in the hair don’t really matter, but if it’s on your scalp it touches the skin and you could absorb some of those chemicals. So, try to do the safer techniques like highlighting, foils, or pulled through the cap. Avoid chemicals to the scalp as much as possible, but there’s not a lot of evidence to say it’s harmful. Just make sure to wash your hands well, and scalp well. Don’t leave the chemicals on longer than you must.
Q: Should you really be eating for two?
A: No. The first trimester you don’t need any extra calories. At eight weeks, the baby is the size of a kidney bean, so you don’t need a whole lot. Second trimester maybe 300 extra calories per day. This could be equivalent to three bananas, a bowl of macaroni and cheese. Then the third trimester maybe 500 extra calories per day. It’s all about choosing wisely, picking healthy options.
These tests may be fun to try, but we asked the doctor. There’s no scientific evidence but you have a 50/50 chance of being right.
