Two-day, free dental clinic being held in Arkadelphia

ARKADELPHIA, Ark (KTHV) -- A two-day, free dental clinic is coming to Arkadelphia through the Arkansas Mission of Mercy (ArMOM).

The clinic is Friday, May 31 and Saturday, June 1 at Henderson State University. The clinic starts at 6 a.m. both days. Adults and children will be treated on a first-come, first-serve basis free of charge with no income or eligibility requirements for cleanings, fillings and extractions.

People lined up in Arkadelphia as early as 5:30 a.m. on Friday just to see a dentist and seek some treatment for whatever dental problem ails them.

Dr. Lee Hinson, a volunteer dentist from Little Rock reviewed a treatment plan with Victor Bryant, who is an Arkadelphia farmer. Bryant said he has had severe dental pain for weeks.

"Pain, couldn't eat, couldn't sleep. Couldn't drink anything cold or hot. It's just misery," he described.

Dr. Hinson decided that Bryant needed three of his teeth extracted--a procedure that would end his pain, and all of it was free of cost. The procedure finally brought Bryant some relief and got him back to his job.

"It's kind of hard and everything, because you can't do nothing really. Always got to take some kind of medication. Got to be drugged up all the time," he explained.

With the help of numerous volunteers and dental professionals, ArMOM will treat hundreds of cases just like Bryant's in two days. The service is rewarding to both the doctors and patients.

The Arkansas Mission of Mercy will be back at it again Saturday morning at 6. The clinic is offering cleanings, fillings and extractions.

Coordinators encourage those needing services to arrive early in order to secure an appointment. No financial information is required and the clinic is open to both children and adults.

This clinic was made possible by ArMOM and hundreds of dental volunteers from all over Arkansas. It is funded by several sponsors including the Walmart Foundation and a $100,000 grant from the Delta Dental of Arkansas Foundation.
