11 Listens: Will insurance cover medical marijuana?

Will insurance cover medical marijuana?

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- In a matter of months, medical marijuana is expected to be available at dispensaries around the state.

But some sick patients are afraid they won't be able to afford it. We've received quite a few emails to 11 Listens, asking how much it will cost and whether insurance might pay for it.

When we spoke with state representative Doug House back in March, he said medical marijuana will need to be competitive to street prices, which can be several hundred dollars an ounce. And don't count on your insurance to pay for it.

"The medical marijuana amendment expressly states that the amendment should not be interpreted to require an insurance provider, either private sector or government insurance program, to reimburse for medical marijuana,” said Jake Bleed with the Department of Finance and Administration.

So your insurance can volunteer to cover it, but it's doubtful many will.
