Little Rock's homicide total increases to 37 after weekend murders

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Two separate shootings in Little Rock over the weekend leave two dead putting the number of homicides in the city this year at 37, quickly creeping up to last year’s total of 42.

Late Friday night, a man from Italy was shot and killed in his car. Then on Saturday, a man was killed at the Spanish Valley Apartments where he lived.

Police found 31-year-old Carlo Marigliano of Italy shot to death in his car at Berkley Apartments on North Shackleford Road. A friends from Naples, Italy told us over Facebook he was a good guy, a husband, and a father.

Then one day later, 55-year-old Evilio Castro Alvarez was found dead late Saturday night on the ground at the Spanish Valley Apartments where he worked and lived. His family told us he moved to Little Rock two years ago from Mexico to work in the construction business. He was a grandfather, a friend, and his family said he didn't have an enemy in the world.

Jose Aguilar at the Mexican consulate said that many workers store cash which puts a potential target on their back. As Deputy Consul, Aguilar recommended using a bank and a card

"Fortunately it’s available to anyone here but sadly again for some reason they don’t follow that recommendation and that is a sad result," said Aguilar.

Little Rock police have about 15 Spanish speaking officers. The language barrier can often make solving these cases difficult. Aguilar said they're not always comfortable talking to police, but he said that shouldn't be the case.

“We have been working with the police to make sure police are only here to keep order and safety, nothing else," he said. "They are not going to ask them about documents or whatever."

As Alvarez's family plans to return his body to Mexico, the family of Marigliano is expected to arrive to Little Rock from Italy on Tuesday.

No arrests have been made in either shooting. Witnesses at the Spanish Valley Apartments told police they saw a black man in a white shirt and long black shorts running from the scene, gun in hand.

These deaths were the 36th and 37th homicides on the year for Little Rock and in the past seven days there have been five people murdered.
