Ark. Senior Beta group performs at the Capitol, raising funds for nationals

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) – The Mountain View Senior Beta performed their talent piece at the State Capitol on Thursday.

Nancy Clayborn, one of the Senior Beta Sponsors, came up with the idea for a veterans themed talent last summer.  She said that the idea came from the Veteran’s Day Assembly the school holds every year and how well that seems to go over with the community.

Once Clayborn set the idea in motion, she let the students take control.  Preparation started in mid-October. The students came up with the choreography, script, and even painted the props. As far as the uniforms, most of them are authentic World War II era uniforms borrowed from James Fountain, a collector of World War II items, according to Clayborn.

Mountain View Senior Beta won first place at the State Beta Convention Group Talent Show in January.  This makes them eligible to compete at the National Beta Convention that takes place in Orlando, Florida in June.

“I felt like we had won the NCAA basketball championship.  It was unreal.  So many years we came in second place, but didn’t win.  These students have worked so hard and practiced a lot.  I’m just thrilled,” said Clayborn.

Mountain View Senior Beta has not won the talent competition in at least 25 years, according to Clayborn.

However, that’s an expensive trip for a small school.  They have to raise $25,000 in order to afford the trip for the 46 eligible students.  That’s part of the reason they performed at the Capitol Thursday.  In addition to their performance, they also held a pie auction at the Capitol.

They are also planning various other fundraisers including “Dinner and a Show” at several churches and various other locations, selling Dippin’ Dots, selling Little Caesar’s Pizzas, and having a faculty versus students basketball game.  A GoFundMe has also been set up for the trip.  Students from Mountain View that placed in recycled art, jewelry making, Spanish, and scrapbooking are also eligible to compete at the National Beta Convention.
