JONESBORO, Ark. (KTHV) - Dr. Doug Whitlock has been chosen by ASU system president Charles L. Welch to serve as interim chancellor effective September 12. Whitlock is currently President Emeritus of Eastern Kentucky University.
Dr. Whitlock has 45 years of higher education experience in both teaching and administrative roles. In 2013 he retired after serving as president at EKU for six years. Whitlock became president in 2007 after retiring from the university before returning to become president.
"His academic and administrative background comes from an institution very comparable to Arkansas State," said Welch. "I spoke to faculty, staff and Regents at Eastern Kentucky who praised his work in shared governance, his commitment to collaboration and consensus building and described him as very approachable."
During his tenure as president, Dr. Whitlock was able to expand different programs including doctoral, online and international studies programs. Welch said the similarities between A-State and EKU will allow Dr. Whitlock to expand and improve growth within the university.
"I am eager to get there and begin getting to know the faculty, staff, student body, alumni and friends of this great institution," said Whitlock. "I am honored and very excited about the opportunity to serve Arkansas State University as its interim chancellor."
Welch said that Dr. Whitlock will not be in consideration for the permanent position as the president. The school will conduct a national search in spring 2017.
