Arkansas's uninsured rate has dropped by half since 2013

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - A new report released by the United States Census Bureau Tuesday shows that the uninsured rate in Arkansas dropped by 50 percent from 2013 to 2016.

Four years ago, 16 percent of Arkansans were without health insurance, but data from 2016 shows that 7.9 percent of people in the state were uninsured. That's roughly a 50 percent drop in a three-year time span.

According to the data, Arkansas uninsured rate is lower than the national average, which was 8.6 percent in 2016.

In 2013, the state legislatures approved the Affordable Care Act's Medicaid expansion which was renamed as Arkansas Works in the state.

Arkansas was one of 32 states that expanded Medicaid.
