Benton group 'Backing Blue' amid tough month

BENTON, Ark. (KTHV) - The Benton community came out to support their local police force at a "Back the Blue" event on Sunday. The police department is currently investigating two fatal officer-involved shootings. Both shootings have happened within the last month.

Members of The Ralph Bunche Neighborhood Association joined with police for a kickball game. The event had been planned prior to the officer-involved shootings.

Thomas Burns died on October 7 after allegedly pointing a gun at a Benton officer. Then on October 17, police killed Keagan Schweikle after a confrontation in the woods. While those cases remain open, but people at the event wanted to show support and show off what they say Benton is all about.

"I think it's a great event," said Benton resident Rodney Wine. "It means a lot to me to see everybody come together like this. Black and white, police officers, citizens. It's just a great thing."

Proceeds from the kickball tournament went toward the neighborhood's youth council.
