Benton man dies after being shot in officer-involved shooting

BENTON, Ark. (KTHV) -- The suspect from an officer involved shooting on Friday, October 7 has died due to injuries sustained from the incident.

Approximately 10:25 pm Friday an officer with the Benton Police Department responded to the 1400 block of Longview Drive on a report of unknown trouble with a male screaming in the area. The officer spoke with a male, Thomas Burns, 49, and a female in the area who were arguing, they were separated without further incident.

The officer then remained in the area to provide extra patrol.

Around 10:57 pm the officer encountered Burns from the previous call. Police say Burns threatened the officer with a handgun which resulted in shots being fired by the officer. Burns was injured and subsequently transported by helicopter to a Little Rock hospital in critical condition.

A handgun that was in the Burns' possession during the incident was located at the scene. Per department policy the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
