Cabot offers free class in civilian response to active shooters

People in Cabot have said they want an active shooter preparedness class and the police created one.

CABOT, Ark. (KTHV) - The Las Vegas mass shooting still sits heavy on people's hearts and minds across the country and now people in Cabot have said they want to be ready if something like that were to ever happen in their community.

Sheri Mitchell said she wants to know the best way to respond to protect herself and her family

“The worst thing that you can do is not be prepared in a worst case event scenario,” she said.

The community's concerns have been heard and a free training class is being offered called CRASE; civilian response to an active shooter.

Lt. Tommy Thompson with the Cabot police department said it teaches people what to do, so they can survive.

“Get away and run, get out of the area as quickly as possible, and barricade yourself somewhere,” he said.

He said make sure when you barricade yourself that it's a reliable protection.

“Bullets can go through certain things, it can go through houses, and cars so the best thing to do is if you can get behind some kind of concrete,” he implied.

He said one of the worst things you can do, is play dead.

“Playing dead makes you an open target because you're lying there in the open, it's not a good thing to do,” he said.

Hill says she is happy to see the department being proactive and feels this training is good information for all ages.

“I think this is a reality for children and even as young as pre-school age because you teach them what to do if something happens. The same as you do when you're trying to advise them about strangers. If you don’t educate them then you're leaving them with no tools to work with,” she said.

The Cabot Police Department says they've seen an enormous amount of interest and will be start setting up classes. They'll post the registration information as they get the details sorted out.
