Charges upgraded for parents of Ark. baby mauled by rats

A southwest Arkansas judge has ordered a teen couple to have no contact with their children after police say their infant was severely bitten by rats in their home.

MAGNOLIA, Ark. (KTHV) -- A southwest Arkansas judge has ordered a teen couple to have no contact with their children after police say their infant was severely bitten by rats in their home.

19-year-old Erica Shryock and 18-year-old Charles Elliot of Magnolia are facing charges of permitting abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.

Investigators say the couple woke up Sunday morning to their infant child screaming and crying.

Doctors say the 15-day-old baby girl received 75 to 100 rodent bites. She also had a large cut on her forehead.

The injuries are so bad that she will need reconstructive surgery on her face.

“What this case about is some people in this world don't need to be parents,” said David Butler, prosecuting attorney.

Investigators believe the parents may have been under the influence of drugs.

The couple's three other children have been placed with the Department of Human Services.
