Chris Olsen on picking the perfect mum

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- With the cooler nights, most of us are thinking about fall and all the wonderful autumn plants that we can plant.  Even though it is a little early, you can start to display or plant fall mums.  There are just a few facts you may want to consider.

1.  September is still warm so chrysanthemums will bloom fast and therefore burn out fast.  This means you may need to replace your mums with another crop or two.  This is what I do.

2.  The more fun sun and therefore heat a mum gets the faster they will burn out.

3.  Mums are heavy feeders so fertilize with an all-purpose fertilizer.

4.  Purchase mums that have a majority of tight buds, and they will last you longer.
