Craig Strickland's wife posts tribute to the singer a year after his death

FORT SMITH, Ark. (KTHV) – It’s been one year since Craig Strickland was found dead in Kay County, Oklahoma. Strickland, the frontman for the county band Backroad Anthem, and his friend Chase Morland were reported missing after disappearing while duck hunting.

Their bodies were eventually found, and authorities concluded that their boat capsized during a severe winter storm. Sam, Strickland’s black lab, was also on the boat, but survived.

Strickland’s wife, Helen, wrote on Instagram yesterday that the day Strickland’s body was found was a “blessing.” Helen, a former Miss Arkansas, said that she and their family took comfort in knowing that Strickland was now “with his Heavenly Father.”

Helen also included the last text messages she shared with Strickland. In the conversation titled “Hubby,” she sent a photo of her sleeping with their black cat. Strickland responded saying that she “looked so precious.”

“I’m so thankful God gave me the blessing of getting to say and hear the words ‘I love you’ to/from him just moments before he and Chase got in their 10ft flat bottom boat,” wrote Helen.

A foundation has been set up in Craig Strickland’s honor. For more information, visit the foundation's website.
