Crews working to repair collapsed part of Highway 15 after recent flooding

Crews working around Arkansas to fix flood damaged roads

PULASKI CO., Ark. (KTHV) - Crews with the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department are working to repair part of Highway 15 that was starting to collapse following flooding over the weekend.

The road is closed from Highway 89 to Interstate 40. It’s one of 100 or so sections of highway across the state that was covered by flood waters.

Around 5,500 vehicles travel the road each day according to AHTD. The section being fixed sits over a creek with culverts. Flood waters washed them out and now crews are completely replacing them along with repairing the highway that started to collapse.

“With the amount of rain that we got, it was just overrun and water was on top of the road, it was trying to go through the culverts as well," said Danny Straessle with AHTD.

This isn’t unheard of and something AHTD looks out for during major floods.

"It can happen at any highway across the state," said Straessle. “Our fear was that if a vehicle ran over that, it would fall through the asphalt and potentially cause a wreck."

Straessle hopes to have the project complete, and the highway reopened by Wednesday afternoon.Straessle adds that this is a reminder not to drive past barricades because drivers don’t know how severely damaged roads are.
