Double your food stamp dollars at the Bernice Garden Farmers' Market

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) – If you have food stamps you can get them doubled at the Bernice Garden Farmers’ Market this weekend.

Beginning this Sunday, June 4, SNAP recipients can double their food dollars to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. The Double-Up Food Bucks program is through the partnership of Arkansas Coalition for Obesity Prevention and other state organizations. Their goal is bringing more fresh produce to the state’s low-income residents.

The Double-Up Food Bucks program matches SNAP benefits (formerly food stamps) with up to $20 in additional funds that can be spent on locally grown fruits and vegetables. This means SNAP recipients can receive up to $40 worth of fresh produce for only $20.

Customers bring their EBT cards, swipe, and receive tokens they can redeem for fruits and vegetables at the various vendors' booths.

Samantha Toro, manager of the Bernice Garden Farmers’ Market said, “My goal is to make the market a vibrant, diverse place with strong ties to the community. Fresh, local veggies should be enjoyed by everyone, not just those who can afford to pay $6 a head for organic lettuce.”

Fighting obesity and food insecurity in Arkansas is a top priority for the organizations administering the program, which include 15 different farmers’ markets across the state.

The Bernice Garden Farmers’ Market is located at 1401 South Main Street here in Little Rock. It is open every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
