LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- The Little Rock Marathon is one of the largest in the nation, and already thousands of runners are checked in and gearing up.
The action starts on Scott Street, between Capital and 4th Street and more than 7,000 runners are expected to run across the finish line. Although rain is expected, runners said it wouldn't stop them from running those 26 miles.
Jacqueline Wilson, a member of Black Girls Run, will join thousands hitting the streets for the 15th annual Little Rock Marathon. She’s excited, energized, and ready for the run around the city of Little Rock.
"We got here last night,” Wilson said. “We actually took a train ride here, Amtrak our first train ride ever from Houston, so that was an adventure within itself."
Her goal is to complete a marathon in all 50 states, and this weekend, Little Rock will be one she'll mark off.
This year it’s projected that more than $6,000,000 tourism dollars will be spent shopping, eating, lodging and registering for the race. Somewhere running the streets will be Jim Mullens. This weekend is his first time ever in Little Rock.
"I am from Royal Oak, Michigan," Mullens said. ”I am running a marathon in all 50 states."
He said it's events like these that offer bonding for him and friends while taking advantage of shopping and exploring.
"I call this my Americana trip,” Wilson said. “Because it's like you get to see America and you get to run marathons, I love to run."
U.A. Little Rock grad Shawn Koehne joins the marathon yet again, only this time he's not alone.
"My fitness isn't quite as good as it was last year,” Shawn said. “But I am just trying to have some fun."
Last year Shawn said he won second place and although he hasn't trained much, he said it's the joy of it all that keeps him coming back, now with his brother Brent.
"I am just hoping for a nice day,” Brent said. “I just want to get through the race."
The race will begin Sunday morning at 7 am so runners are advised to get there early.
"It's so beautiful and relaxing to run these marathons,” Wilson said. “And you can see all of the highlights of the city and what they have to offer, so I am just looking for that."
