Pine Bluff man found dead in pond, family grieving

PINE BLUFF, Ark. (KTHV) – A Pine Bluff family is still searching for answers after 29-year-old Shawn Miller was found dead in a pond near his home early Tuesday morning.

Investigators are treating Miller’s death as a homicide investigation. Miller’s family and authorities said he was a hard-working father with no criminal history. His death was a shock to everyone.

"He was a family man, a loving father of two twin boy and girl," Major Lafayette Woods said.

Deputies and investigators were dispatched to the 3200 block of Wheeler Chapel Road in Pine Bluff Tuesday morning to the report of an unresponsive man lying in a pond.

"There are some things that concern investigators and myself arriving on scene," Woods said. “Currently, we don’t have any new updates to whether or not we can truly say what happened in his final hours.”

Woods said Miller was just moving back in to a home on family property that has been in the family since he was born. He said the back door to his home is just 40 feet from the pond.

"The pond itself is situated between the house where Mr. Miller was living and the actual mother's home," he said.

Woods said the last person he spoke to was his mother on Saturday, but it was his aunt who made the phone call saying he was missing nearly three days later.

"Some suspicion or concern arose because he had missed work, and talking to the family that was unusual," Woods said.

Family members said Miller had a bubbly personality and hated no one. He worked two jobs; one at Tyson and the other at the highway department.

"They did not indicate anybody they knew that wanted to harm him or bring harm to him," Woods said.

Major Woods said he knew Miller himself and knows how devastating this loss is for everyone.

“We hope to one way or another to bring the family closure and determine what happened to Mr. Miller in his final hours," he said.

Major Woods said investigators are waiting to hear back from the Arkansas Medical Examiner for a cause of death. He said there is a possibility of foul play, so they have not yet it out.

Miller’s father said he did not know of any medical conditions he may have had.
