Film On 11: Going In Style

New in theaters this week, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Alan Arkin team up for the heist of a lifetime in the Zach Braff directed Going In Style.

Willie, Joe, and Al are lifelong buddies who have been retired from the same factory for a few years and one day, their pension checks stop coming. They find out that the factory has been sold and their pension fund is being used to settle the company's debts. Desperate to pay the bills and determined to live a life that affords them the privilege of having a piece of pie whenever they darn well please, these straight-and-narrow friends decide to knock off the very bank that absconded with their money.

Going In Style is a funny and charming movie with three actors that I really like who have good chemistry together. Freeman, Caine, and Arkin are all Oscar winners but don't expect anything like that from them in this movie. They come in and do the bare minimum to make it work. I'm sure they wanted to do an easy movie together that didn't require a lot of effort and they probably got paid enough to remodel their vacation homes. That minimum effort works.

The screenplay was written by Theodore Melfi who also wrote and directed Hidden Figures and is directed by Zach Braff who you probably remember from the TV show Scrubs or his film Garden State.

I liked Going In Style, it's not a comedy that will stand out amongst the greats but its fun to watch and its premise is pretty simple and grounded, mostly, in reality. My favorite scene is near the beginning when Al, Joe, and Willie are watching The Bachelorette and making commentary that sounds exactly like what 3 men watching that show would say. Of course, the odds of 3 men their age and physical condition pulling off a bank robbery are slim to none but the way they do it seems legit. There’s not a moment that’s so far out there to make you say “oh, come on”.

It was fun.

Embarking on a rollercoaster journey full of action and danger, the Smurfs are on a course that leads to the discovery of the biggest secret in Smurf history!

I wonder what they find! Could it be a lost village with other Smurfs in it?

Chasing down the biggest story of his career, Lee comes face-to-face with unexpected results that could change everything he knows to be true.
