Food insecurity prevalent on college campuses

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Food or books? That's a decision many college students across the country are forced to make every day. "Hunger on Campus" is a report that claims to reveal the truth about the issue at 26 colleges in 12 states.

Food insecurity is an epidemic many college students experience nationwide. The report found that nearly 3800 students suffer from hunger.

The issue is prevalent at both two-year and four-year institutions. Minority students, students that come from low income families, and single parents are often directly affected by food insecurity. Many people are too embarrassed to seek help.

To help students in need the study suggests creating campus gardens, food recovery programs and advise students about government aid options. UALR Trojan Food Pantry is open every Thursday from 11-2:30. The pantry is student-run and operates solely on volunteers and donations.
