LAVACA, Ark. (KTHV) - A Greenwood police officer who resigned Monday following a DWI arrested was pulled over and let go several minutes before he crashed.

According to CBS affiliate KFSM, Regan Whitworth was arrested on Sunday in Lavaca for a DWI charge. Police reports say Whitworth was driving his vehicle when he left the roadway to during a curve in the road.

Once his car left the roadway he crossed a ditch and hit an embankment. The report said his vehicle hit a utility pole, breaking it in half. A passenger was in the car with Whitworth at the time of the accident.

Arkansas State Police arrested Whitworth and charged him with driving while under the influence.

But 20 minutes before the car crash, Lavaca reserve officer Scott McDonald stopped Whitworth and performed a welfare check on the driver. McDonald stated he did not smell alcohol at the time.

Whitworth registered a 0.10 blood alcohol level when he was at the Sebastian County jail.
