JONESBORO, Ark. (KTHV) – Arkansas State University received a new best friend and protector for the students, faculty, and staff.
Her name is Scout and she is a six-month-old black German Shepherd. The Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management Department recently received a special and unique donation.
Scout was donated by the Crowley’s Ridge German Shepherds of Paragould. Scout has a high drive and comes from a prestigious working dog bloodline being AKC registered.
Scout was born on March 12, 2017, and came to DPEM at 8 weeks old. Mr. David Richey, the owner of Crowley’s Ridge German Shepherd’s, is an advocate of giving back to his community and as a First Responder, recognizes the need for, and advantage of K9 assets in Northeast Arkansas as well as the state.
Scout is being trained for live victim disaster search which is a long tedious process.
Dr. Brent Cox, Director of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management is the primary handler and caregiver for Scout. All faculty and staff are committed and involved in training and working with her. After training is complete, Scout will become an asset during times of disaster including tornadoes, earthquakes, or any missing person event.
Upon Scout’s arrival, numerous community members have stepped up to assist in sponsoring and ensuring Scout succeeds and is well-taken care for. Orschlen Farm and Home of Paragould committed to providing a bad of food per month. Dr. Archie Ryan of Southwest Drive Animal Clinic has donated his services as Scout’s veterinarian. Ridgemark Retrievers of Brookland is assisting with the initial obedience training that started on August 1.
Once basic obedience is established, Scout and the DPEM faculty will begin working with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security Search and Rescue Training program to complete the training and certification process.
Scout has quickly become a friendly and exciting furry face in the College of Nursing and Health Professions. She enjoys coming to work each day and visiting with students, faculty, and staff.
