Huge crowd turns out for Zoo's 'Dollar Day'

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - A combination sure to cause a weekend traffic jam in the middle of the city—sunny skies and Dollar Day at the Little Rock Zoo— happened Saturday.

The traffic back up stretched for about a mile down I-630 as families flooded the zoo to take advantage of $1 admission. The jam was reminiscent of when the Hogs play at War Memorial Stadium next-door.

"It was like more than a Razorbacks game," described Galvin Dennis, a zoo visitor. "People came out to swim, to go to the zoo. It was just like a day out for the whole Little Rock, I'll say."

Dennis said he had a ride, and they tried three different approaches to get into the zoo. He said his ride eventually just dropped him and his granddaughter off in the middle of Fair Park, and they walked the rest of the way.

They were not alone, but through it all, zoo officials said everybody remained in great spirits throughout the day.

"We had lines even before we opened this morning, and we try to rush people through as fast as we can, so everybody gets the opportunity," said Little Rock Zoo director Mike Blakely.
