YELL COUNTY, Ark. (KTHV) -- The man accused of killing a Yell County Sheriff's Deputy, along with a woman and her teenage granddaughter, is heading to prison for life.
James Bowden pleaded guilty Friday. He admitted to killing Lt. Kevin Mainhart, 61-year-old Rita Miller, and 17-year-old Ciera Miller. In exchange, prosecutors agree to take the death penalty off the table.
In May, Lieutenant Mainhart initiated a traffic stop after identifying a vehicle believed to be associated with a disturbance call at Gum Springs Road.
During the course of the traffic stop the deputy was fatally wounded. A short-time later a motorist passing the site notified local law enforcement Lieutenant Mainhart had been shot.
As other local officers arrived at the Gum Springs address, the bodies of Rita Miller and Ciera Miller were found outside the residence.
The Millers were relatives of Bowden's girlfriend, who he allegedly kidnapped but later released.
