Levee on Black River fails at Pocahontas

POCAHONTAS, Ark. (KTHV) -- According to the National Weather Service, the levee has failed on the Black River in Pocahontas.

The National Weather Service in Memphis says the levee was breached at about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday near Pocahontas, about 125 miles northeast of Little Rock. Residents in nearby communities have been urged to seek higher ground.

This is considered a flash flood emergency and residents need to seek higher ground. NWS states that water rescues are occurring just south of Pocahontas in the Shannon community.

A mandatory evacuation had been issued for parts of Pocahontas earlier in the week.
