Shoppers hit McCain Mall for Sales-Tax Free Holiday

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Customers lined up Saturday morning, waiting for stores to open at the McCain Mall. Stores opened an hour early for Arkansas' annual free sales tax holiday.

Chancey Harris bought the majority the items her son needed for back to school at Old Navy. "I woke up super early," said Harris. "I needed to get to the mall, to buy uniforms, get shoes and basic things like socks."

Every item in retail stores across the state is tax-free. Many retail chain stores have additional discounts to entice customers into coming in. Some of those stores include JC Penny, Dillard's, Target and Wal-Mart, but school supplies aren't the only items on sale. People can also buy cosmetics, jewelry, shoes and other non-school related clothing without the sales tax this weekend.

Shara Brazear, the marketing director of McCain Mall said this is a great way to kick-start holiday sales. "Holiday season usually starts in the fall, so this is a great time to have parents buy supplies for school, but also for when it gets chilly during the holidays."

Some shops offer gift receipts for that very reason. Retail manager Teresa Reginelli has seen plenty of customers start to purchase Christmas gifts. "We have polo shirts for $5 in boys and girls, but we also have sweaters and jackets. People are interested in buying for both occasions."

College books are also on sale online through the weekend. The mall has extended hours from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, and 11 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.
