LRPD releases name of man killed in officer-involved shooting

New information in officer-involved shooting

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- Little Rock police have identified the man shot by police early Tuesday morning.

Little Rock police responded to multiple calls referencing a disturbance with a weapon in the area of East 8th and Sherman streets just before 1 a.m.

According to the police report, Roy Lee Richards, 46, was pointing a long gun at another individual when he was shot by police.  He died at the scene.

The report does not say Richards pointed the gun at the officers or fired the gun.  It does say that the unidentified individual was unarmed in the incident.

The individual, who did know Richards, said Richards had started an altercation that became physical.  Richards then went to his car to get the long gun at which point the police arrived.

"It's an isolated incident,” said Lieutenant Steve McClanahan.  “This was the first call this year. So as far as having a problem with the police responding to that address this year, so we do believe it's an isolated incident.”

Both officers, who were also unharmed, have been placed on administrative leave.  Their names will be released within 48 of the original incident.  LRPD said the situation is still under investigation.

"The preliminary investigation is that the officers used force. They obviously had a perception that another person's life was in danger of serious bodily harm or death. The officers acted on that,” said McClanahan.
