Man drowns saving three girls in Arkansas River

BARLING, Ark. (KTHV) -- Searchers recovered the body of a man who drowned in the Arkansas River near Barling, after trying to save three girls near Lock and Dam 13.

They found 18-year-old Eric Antonio around 6:30 Sunday evening.

The Crawford County Sheriff said Antonio dove into the river after seeing the girls getting caught in a current. He saved two of them, while the third got back to shore on her own. But Antonio went under, and did not resurface.

Rain and high water held up search efforts overnight Saturday and again Sunday morning.

The three girls -- aged 5, 14 and 17 -- were treated at the hospital and are expected to recover.
