Jermain Taylor prepares to fight charges against him

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- Bond was set for $25,000 for Jermain Taylor when he appeared in court Wednesday morning. THV11's Kevin Trager reports that he was seen leaving the jail just after 11 a.m.

Taylor's wife, Erica was also in court for the bond hearing, and she asked the judge to allow her husband to participate in the October fight

Taylor was arrested Tuesday night for allegedly shooting his cousin after an altercation in his home.

Investigators believe that Taylor had a history of altercations with this cousin, and they said when the cousin showed up at his home, Taylor told him to leave and started shooting.

Taylor appeared by video arraignment just before 9 a.m. Wednesday. District Judge Wayne Gruber set his bond at $25,000. Taylor's attorney requested that he be able to fight in an event in Connecticut in October, and the judge allowed it. He will also be able to travel. He said he must sign a waiver of extradition and check in weekly with his bail bondsman. USA TODAY Sports reports the fight is actually in Biloxi, Mississippi.

The victim, Taylor's cousin, is still in the hospital in serious condition. He suffered at least two gunshot wounds. Taylor was issued a no-contact order with the victim. Investigators say Taylor and his cousin have a history of altercations. Taylor didn't comment when he was leaving the jail, but his attorneys told THV11 that he plans to fight the charges.

His next court date is Oct. 15.

According to USA TODAY Sports, Taylor, a former middleweight champion who was out of boxing for 26 months, has won four fights since returning in December of 2011.
