New housing development opens in Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Ark. (KTHV) - Jacksonville city leaders and directors celebrated the end of a building project Wednesday and the beginning of a new opportunity for area families.

The Housing Authority opened a new housing development, called The Meadows, that is all about renting new homes to families with low incomes.

City leaders said the development is a great way to get families out of apartments and into houses with a back yard and a community feel.

"We have rent as low as $300, and we have some that is better than $1,000. We have market shares too," said Housing Authority Director Phil Nix.

Nix was among several city leaders who came out to the ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday afternoon to celebrate the completion of The Meadows. He said it's not only rent that's affordable, but the homes are also energy efficient.

"It's the biggest blessing I've ever gotten," describes Bryan Kye, one of the new proud renters. His home is one of 55 structures built for low income residents to rent.

Kye was in an accident years ago, and sometimes pain puts him in a wheelchair, so he now rents this wheel chair accessible house. The layout isn't the only thing Kye loves, he said it's affordable, too.

"Medical bills can offset rent which can actually make your payment a little cheaper," he explained.

One thing Kye said you can't put a price on is raising his two boys in a house with a yard to play in.

Those 55 houses went up in just five months, and so far 17 are rented out. If you are interested, go to the PDC Companies website at

The Meadows has been made possible with funding from:

• US Department of Housing & Urban Development (Little Rock)
• Arkansas Development Finance Authority
• Prudential Huntoon Paige
• Alliant Capital Group
• First Arkansas Bank & Trust of Jacksonville.

Nix told THV 11 News that developers plan to build a housing division just like The Meadows in Pine Bluff as well.
