Newport high school student arrested after shooting threat

NEWPORT, Ark. (KTHV) – A 17-year-old Newport High School student was taken into custody on Tuesday after he allegedly wrote a threat about a school shooting on a bathroom wall in the school.

According to Newport Superintendent Larry Bennett, it was discovered on Monday afternoon that someone had written on the wall of the boys’ bathroom that there would be a school shooting on May 9.  Security patrol was increased at the junior high and high school campus.

The Newport School District obtained statements from multiple witnesses that identified the student who made the threats. He was arrested and transported to the Newport Police Department where he declined to provide a statement.

He is in custody at the Jackson County Jail and will be transported to a juvenile detention center. Police say the teen was not armed at the time of his arrest.

He is expected to appear in juvenile court on Wednesday to face charges of first degree terroristic threatening.
